Live vs Edited

QUT Music Showcase 2024 live stream

In late 2024, Queensland University of Technology hosted a live performance showcasing the graduating music students' performances. I was fortunate enough to direct this live show, managing the vision of the live performance through a multi-cam system with four cameras, which was being live streamed to YouTube.

Full live stream

The overall live stream went smoothly with no major issues or pauses. There were even some great moments where the vision was beautifully transitioning during the live. However, reflecting on the pacing and timing of cuts, it was clear that due to the nature of the instantaneous environment, there were moments where shots were lingering on for too long or the camera was pointing at the wrong subject. Despite all the minor errors, it was a successful stream and I was happy with the result.

After the stream concluded, knowing the imperfections of the live version, I began re-editing a new version of the performances using the raw footage from each camera.

When re-editing, I was not using the live version as a reference — I wanted to choose what looked best at each moment without the rush and time restrictions of a live environment.

While the re-edited version definitely has better coverage and pacing, I was surprised to see that the live and edited versions had a lot of similarities. This showed that I was able to find great coverages during the live, and would have made the same or similar choices even with more time to think and plan.

Side-by-Side Comparisons

Radial Delay — Echoes

This was a unique and, honestly, life-changing experience — one I'll continue to explore and develop my skills in.
